Pres. Park vows to make efforts to realize peace on Korean peninsula
Will the new year bring about a new era of
inter-Korean relations? President Park Geun-hye says… she will make
sure that efforts are made in 2014 to realize peace on the Korean peninsula.
Her remarks came in response to a New Year’s phone call from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
on Thursday,… one day after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, in his New Year’s address,
delivered an unexpected, conciliatory message to South Korea.
President Park also said that no country should be allowed to hurt regional neighbors by breaching
trust, and urged the UN chief to help pave the road for global peace and cooperation.
Those remarks are seen by many as a rebuke of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who
last week visited the highly controversial Yasukuni war shrine.
